Final Fantasy 14’s fishing ‘raids’ are the best thing in the game right now
Final Fantasy 14 is consistently getting updates that add more content to the game, but the latest addition of multiplayer fishing parties really takes the cake.
I’m not much of an endgame raider; I run the slightly difficult “Extreme” stuff to get weapons and mounts, but I rarely do anything harder than that. I don’t have the time or schedule to coordinate with a group to run it, and I’m pretty scared of strangers on the internet being mean to me about my damage. Whenever updates come out that release a new tier of Savage raids and stuff, I’m mostly excited for my friends and I enjoy the rest of the patch content on my own.
However, patch 5.2 for Final Fantasy 14 added a brand new feature, perfectly suited for me: ocean fishing. Ocean fishing takes place every two hours and you can group up with 23 other players to fish on a boat. You have a couple minutes to fish at three different locations before the boat moves. The better the fish, the more points you score, and there are party bonuses for meeting certain requirements. There is also an adorable tiny shark minion and a goofy-looking shark mount if you score above a threshold. I must have both.
It’s been a long time since a video game has found ways to disrupt my real life the way massively multiplayer online fishing has. In MapleStory, I would log on at specific times to try to get a cosmetic chair I wanted, but that was many years ago. Now I find myself making sure I’m logged into Final Fantasy 14 every other hour to fish — and I make sure to let my friends know.
We party up and will pick spots next to each other on the boat. We’ll be in Discord calls lamenting our good (or more often, bad) luck and sharing strategies.
For the most part, sea fishing is pretty wholesome. People cheer when a rare spectral current gets triggered or they’ll set up their fishing spot next to their friends to spend time together. However, everyone has banded together against a common enemy: the Momora Mora fish. This cursed fish is big, and it triggers the large catch notification, so people will waste their skills in the hopes of reeling in double fish with double points … only to pull in this low-scoring dud of a fish.
I gush frequently about how much I enjoy Final Fantasy 14, and the addition of ocean fishing only makes me love the game even more. Square Enix offers something for all types of players, whether you’re a casual fisher or a hardcore raider, and the company continues to add a variety of fun, fresh content. There’s so much to do in the game and with all of the references to older Final Fantasy titles, like the recent addition of Final Fantasy 7’s Ruby Weapon boss, it’s the perfect MMORPG for me to kill time with.
Even in the face of Momora Mora fish toxicity, these fishing raids have brought me closer to my friends — as well as whatever strangers get suckered into my party.
