Destiny 2 players solve the last clue in a 2-year-old puzzle

A 2-year-old puzzle for an alternate reality game tied to Destiny 2 has at last been solved. The solution was already reached by brute force, and the real-world treasure it led to has long since been discovered and claimed. But hey, at least fans know how the third cipher in the Rasputin ARG is uncoded.

Twitter user Javano and fellow player Bachmanetti teamed up for the solution, noticed on Friday by IGN. To recap, the Rasputin ARG, which was part of the May 2018 Warmind expansion, had six icons which led to three cipher keys, and those decoded a message that directed players to a real-world location. There players found a replica of a Destiny 2 weapon and a cache of Warmind engraved coins, shortly after the expansion arrived.

Because the original treasure hunters already found the solution to the third cipher (“Mechanized”), and the loot was looted soon after, players lost interest in figuring out how designers intended for it to be decoded. Not Javano and Bachmanetti. A DM transcript Javano posted to Twitter on Thursday evening describes the process and the solution.

Bachmanetti put the key pieces together with the realization that the puzzle’s diamond icon is identical to the reticle for the Sleeper Stimulant, the exotic linear fusion rifle introduced in Warmind. That led them to a warning sign on Mars that the community had long believed was part of the Rasputin puzzle. Lo and behold, by lining up the reticle with that sign, Bachmanetti was able to pull out 10 letters it highlighted on the sign, and those spell “mechanized.”
