You have to spend $1,750 to get a free game with PlayStation Stars

Earning free games through PlayStation Stars is far costlier than imagined, with $1,750 worth of points needed to redeem just one $70 game.

Much like its revamped PlayStation Plus service, it seems Sony hasn’t done a particularly good job at explaining the intricacies of its new PlayStation Stars loyalty program.

As a quick reminder, signing up to PlayStation Stars lets you unlock digital trophies, as well as earn points by playing and purchasing games that can be redeemed for discounts on PlayStation products, including other games.

The programme is already live in the US, and it’s once again fallen to regular customers to work out that you need to spend roughly $1,750 (about £1,560) worth of games to earn just one extra $70 game for free.

For whatever reason, Sony has neglected to inform users how many points they’ll receive upon purchasing a game.

However, it’s believed to grant users one point for every 10 cents spent on a purchase, including taxes. So, $1 equals 10 points.

This is according to Crusader3456 on Twitter, who received 742 points for their God Of War Ragnarök pre-order, which cost $74.20.
