The Nintendo Switch has a new handheld rival, with Valve deciding to showcase its new handheld gaming machine, the Steam Deck, this week, ahead of the first chance to reserve one.
Gamers interested in buying one so that they can play their Steam Digital Library on the go will get their first chance on Friday, July 16.
This is when Steam is allowing gamers to reserve a console by putting down a $5 payment. This has to be done via a Steam account that already has a purchase history.
According to the latest news from Valve is that the Steam Deck reserves will open at 6pm BST on July 16.
Gamers can expect plenty of interest when the first pre-order options go live, with several different models available.
The cheapest Steam Deck costs $399.00, comes with 64GB in storage and comes with a carrying case.
The most expensive Deck costs $649.00, comes with a 512GB NVMe SSD, as well as an Exclusive carrying case, Steam Community profile bundle, and a virtual keyboard theme.
The Steam Deck FAQ provides other answers to why Valve is asking players to reserve a console before buying one, revealing:
“The main reason for reservations is to ensure an orderly and fair ordering process for customers when Steam Deck inventory becomes available.
“The additional fee gives us a clearer signal of intent to purchase, which gives us better data to balance supply chain, inventory, and regional distribution leading up to launch.
“We are aware of potential unauthorized resellers, and as an additional safeguard to ensure a fair ordering process, we’ve added a requirement that the reserver has made a purchase on Steam prior to June 2021 for the first 48 hours of reservation availability.

“When you submit a reservation, you will be put in a queue. Once inventory is available, you will be emailed in the order the reservations were made.
“We are aiming to start sending order invitations by December 2021. We will make every effort to convert all reservations to orders but we are not able to guarantee availability.”
For those interested in buying one of the new handheld gaming machines, the official specs list will be an important, especially for those planning on using it as one of their primary devices.
