Pokémon Charizard card sells for $183,000 at auction, goes to rapper Logic
On Friday, a rare Charizard went up for auction. Called the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s “crown jewel” by Iconic Auctions, the starting bid was set at $40,000. When the smoke cleared, the gem-mint first-edition went for $183,812. The buyer? None other than the rapper named Logic.
The Pokémon TCG launched in the U.S. in 1999 and was initially published by Wizards of the Coast (Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons). Since 2003 it’s been published by The Pokémon Company. According to speculators at Cardhops, this is the highest amount ever paid for this particular card.
For Logic, born Sir Robert Bryson Hall II in 1990, it was much more meaningful.
When I was a kid I absolutely loved Pokémon but couldn’t afford the cards. I remember even trying to trade food stamps for theirs and now as an adult who has saved every penny he has made being able to enjoy something that I’ve loved since childhood now as a grown man is like buying back a piece of something I could never have, it’s not about the material it’s about the experience.

The market for collectible card games has heated up in recent years as those who grew up with the first wave of these kinds of games reach their 30s and 40s. In 2019, a rare Black Lotus card from Magic: The Gathering went for more than $166,000 at auction — more than doubling the card’s value.
