Mortal Kombat 11’s Spawn Has A Cool Batman Easter Egg
Spawn has a lot of easter eggs in his Mortal Kombat 11 intros, but the coolest might just be his intro with Raiden.
Spawn is coming to Mortal Kombat 11. He arrives for Kombat Pack owners tomorrow and becomes available for general purchase one week later. That said, we’ve been getting teased mercilessly with gameplay, fatalities, and intros, and it looks like Spawn has a pretty awesome Batman easter egg during his intro with Raiden.
We’ve got YouTube account MKIceAndFire to thank for this video, which was provided during a visit to a Warner Brothers Games event celebrating Spawn’s impending release. Not ever Spawn intro is revealed, but there are quite a few and a bunch of them have great references to other games and universes.
When Raiden shows up, he notes that Spawn reminds him of “another dark knight,” to which Spawn replies:
“The billion-dollar crusader? He’s a friend.”
“Seems we are both well-traveled,” Raiden remarks.
This is not just an obvious reference to Batman, but also a reference to the 1994 Batman/Spawn crossover comic co-written by Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane.
Raiden’s other intro with Spawn makes a Lord of the Rings reference, referring to Spawn as “Hellspawn of the Eighth Sphere,” before telling Spawn, “You shall not pass!”
There’s lots more in the video, including references to Clown/Violator and other aspects of the Spawn universe (Malbolgia is Shinook’s brother? Who knew?!). In Spawn’s intro with Scorpion, the references change gear and instead point at two different fighting games.
Spawn: “You’ve been to other dimensions?”
Scorpion: “Each had its own injustices.”
Spawn: “I guess that’s why my soul still burns.”
On its face, this exchange seems to discuss a whole lot of nothing, but it actually refers to Injustice, the other fighting game franchise from NetherRealm Studios, as well as the SoulCalibur franchise from Bandai Namco.
Spawn arrives March 17 for Kombat Pack owners, and March 24th for everyone who cares to buy him. And you should.
