Mortal Kombat 11 support officially over as NetherRealm start next game

NetherRealm has confirmed that there will be no more DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 and it’s now focusing on its next game.

In the two years since its release, Mortal Kombat 11 saw 12 additional characters (including guest stars like Rambo and the Terminator), a second story mode, an enhanced re-release for the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles, and a whole lot more.

Even with the 35+ roster, many fans hoped more classic characters or special guests would be included, but NetherRealm has put the kibosh on any future plans.

In a short and simple message, NetherRealm has confirmed that support for Mortal Kombat 11 is over, and the studio is now fully committed to its next project.

As for what NetherRealm’s next game is, we can make an educated guess, even though it was completely absent from E3 2021 (parent company Warner Bros. was in attendance but only had Back 4 Blood to show).

Job listings have already all but confirmed that Mortal Kombat 12 and Injustice 3 are in development, but these were widely suspected even before then. Considering how NetherRealm alternates between the two franchises, it’s likely that its next release will be another entry in the DC Comics fighting game series.

The last game, Injustice 2, released in 2017, two years after Mortal Kombat X. Set in a new universe where Superman goes rogue and takes over the world, it saw DC’s heroes split apart and fight each other, as well as various villains.

Considering its story mode featured two different endings, it remains to be seen which one Injustice 3 will follow. Or perhaps it will follow neither. The Mortal Kombat storyline has now been rebooted twice thanks to time travel shenanigans, so we can totally imagine something similar happening with Injustice.

There is one other possibility and that’s the rumoured Marvel fighting game. The idea seems very unlikely considering it would require Disney agreeing to outsource the project to a rival company and Warner Bros. agreeing to promote its rival’s property.

However, NetherRealm’s Ed Boon did say in the past that he was approached for a Marvel fighting game and that he’d love to make Marvel vs DC. That may sound impossible, but Marvel and DC have collaborated on crossover comics before, so a crossover game isn’t entirely out of the question.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Stadia.
