E3 2020 cancelled: PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox gaming event announcement soon – Report
E3 2020 is expected to be cancelled in the coming days by the Entertainment Software Association.
And that means we can’t be guaranteed any massive gaming announcements during the month of June, although some may still be revealed online.
A new report shared by Ars Technica claims that the ESA will soon confirm the cancellation of the large gaming event.
The three-day event at the Los Angeles Convention Center has been the centre for some massive reveals in recent year, although the industry has been shifting away somewhat.
Before this latest E3 news, Sony has already confirmed that they would not be attending, just like what happened in 2019.
A statement from the ESA at the time reveals: “E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world.
“E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike.
“Exhibitor interest in our new activations is gaining the attention of brands that view E3 as a key opportunity to connect with video game fans worldwide.”
But while Sony was going to be skipping it this year, other massive companies were still going to be at the event, or posted nearby.
It’s unclear at this time why E3 2020 is not going ahead, although it seems likely to be in connection with the impact of the Coronavirus.
A message on the ESA site currently includes this information on the situation, adding: “The health and safety of our attendees, exhibitors, partners, and staff is our top priority.
“While the ESA continues to plan for a safe and successful E3 show June 9-11, 2020—we are monitoring and evaluating the situation daily.
“Our E3 team and partners continue to monitor COVID-19 via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). We are actively assessing the latest information and will continue to develop measures to further reduce health risks at the show.”
The ESA is expected to break the news regarding the cancellation in the coming days, and this could provide a clearer outlook on why the event has been canned.
Other big events have also been affected by the Coronavirus, with GDC being postponed and other eSports events being held online.
