Destiny 3 is not next Bungie game, a comedy RPG dungeon crawler is
Bungie has gone into unexpected detailed about what its next project is, as job ads describe a ‘whimsical’ RPG with a competitive edge.
It’s over a year now since Bungie ended their publishing deal with Activision, but for the average gamer it’s not obvious that much has changed.
There’s been no serious talk yet of Destiny 3 and with Destiny 2 already confirmed for the next gen consoles, it seems as if Bungie are in no hurry to release another game. They have promised a new, non-Destiny, title before 2025 though and it seems they’ve already started advertising for staff to work on it.
Video game job descriptions can often be peculiarly descriptive about new projects and the ones that have appeared this week on Bungie’s website seem to give away an awful lot, considering they’ve never spoken publicly about the game.
One role is for an Investment Designer and involves managing a ‘giant database of hundreds of baubles, weapons, and armour’ and ‘building a system to cleverly distribute those items in a necromancer’s dungeon’.
Another role for Lead Combat Designer is to help ‘build our next great IP’ and makes reference to action adventure games, MMOs, and spellbooks.
Meanwhile, an ad for a new Art Director describes the game as ‘comedic with light-hearted and whimsical characters’ but also wants someone with experience designing ‘competitive games’.
It’s so descriptive it almost feels like it’s intended as some kind of bait and switch, to hide what the game’s really about. Except these are real job ads that are trying to recruit pretty senior roles.
The only obvious assumption is that Bungie is building some kind of comedic role-playing game, with lots of loot, a fantasy setting, and a strong competitive angle.
We may even know the name, as Bungie trademarked the name Matter a few years ago and so far has never used it.
A fantasy version of Destiny with swords instead of guns certainly sounds like something Bungie might try but the one thing the job ads don’t give away is how long it’ll be until there’s an official reveal. But if they’re only recruiting key staff now it could be a long wait.
