Currys PC World charging £2449 for Xbox Series X to put off scalpers
Customers who have pre-ordered an Xbox Series X have received a strange email telling them of a price increase, but it’s not what it seems.
This is weird, so bear with us, but the Xbox Series X now costs £2,449 at Currys PC World and an Xbox Series S is £2,249. Except they’re not really and it all seems to be some sort of elaborate plan to beat the scalpers.
The main problem here is that Currys hasn’t properly explained what they’re doing, when they sent customers that had already pre-ordered an email telling them the price had gone up by £2,000.
No one will have to pay that much though and instead everyone will be sent a £2,005 discount code to use when they pay to ‘make sure your pre-order is prioritised when orders open online’ (the £5 discount is for the deposit you have to pay).
The prevailing theory is that this is meant to be a way to put off scalpers and their bots from instantly buying up all the stock.
The idea is presumably that bots will see the higher price and ignore it, plus they won’t be able to use the necessary voucher code, as that requires a manual input.
Whether that works remains to be seen but you can’t help but think there must be a better option than scaring people into thinking they have to find another £2,000 for their new console.
The voucher codes are also already being sold on eBay, for anything up to £100 and beyond, where, hilariously, the consoles are being referred to as ‘Xbox Series One X’.
Because apparently some people don’t mind paying hundreds of pounds extra for a new console even when they’re not sure what it’s called.
To make matters odder there’s no sign that the same system is being use for the PlayStation 5, but then it’s currently sold out anyway. So is the Xbox Series X now though, which is why the voucher codes are going for so much on eBay.
