NACE Partners With Henderson Engineers, Populous to Develop Design Guidelines for Collegiate Esports Facilities

The National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) has partnered with Kansas City, Missouri-based construction design firm Henderson Engineers and Populous to create physical build guidelines for collegiate esports spaces, with the goal of providing these plans to its members seeking to build out their own esports facilities on college campuses.

The initial design guidelines were developed by Populous, who was integral in building out the Fusion Arena in Philadelphia in 2019 (its opening was delayed this year due to COVID-19) and Esports Stadium Arlington. Those initial guidelines were developed with advice from NACE and then expanded upon by Henderson Engineers, a division of construction firm Henderson Builders. The guidelines cover architecture, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems, with Kansas City-based Esport Supply (NACE’s official technology partner) providing computer and peripheral recommendations in the document. These guidelines also provide guidance on building out new facilities or retrofitting existing spaces on college campuses.

NACE, Populous, and Henderson are also part of the Kansas City Esports Coalition (KCEC), which was formed by the Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation earlier this year. The coalition advocates for growing the esports scene in the greater Kansas City area, steered by an advisory council that includes NACE Executive Director Michael Brooks, Esports Supply Founder Jake Zinn, Populous Brand Activation Manager Marvin Mastin, Henderson Engineers Sports Practice Leader Kevin Butler, and many other leaders and stakeholders in the city.

Note: Populous Senior Principal Brian Mirakian, will join Esports Stadium Arlington President Jonathon Oudthone, and Nerd Street Gamers Founder John Fazio will take part in the panel discussion, “The Future of Esports Physical Venue Design,” at Esports Rising on Nov. 19.
