G2 Stands Alone at Worlds 2020 – Weekly Twitch Top 10s, Oct. 12-18

The 2020 League of Legends World Championship has whittled its field down to just four teams, a reduction in total games played which led to a drop in hours watched.

Meanwhile, Among Us remains remarkably stable as a collaborative streaming powerhouse, and French streamers unite to raise money for charity.

Twitch’s Top Channel – Riot Games

Worlds 2020 saw a significant reduction in hours watched this week, having moved out of its six-games-per-day group stage and into a top eight elimination round with a single best-of-five match each broadcast day. This meant a major drop in total broadcast hours, as most series did not go the full five games. However, peak viewership on the main channel surpassed 500K viewers, showing that while people are tuning in for fewer total hours, there are still plenty of viewers keeping an eye on the proceedings of the tournament.

This coming weekend’s semifinals will likely see a further reduction in hours watched with only two series to play, but will likely see a new peak in viewership as the whole of Western esports fandom rallies around their sole remaining contestant – G2 Esports.

Twitch’s Top Content – Just Chatting

The drop in Worlds 2020 viewership allowed Just Chatting to retake its throne, amassing over 45M hours watched for the week. More noteworthy, however, is the continued presence of Among Us in third place, hovering around a fairly consistent 24M hours watched. The game’s success makes it remarkably difficult to predict future Twitch trends, given that it was not tied directly to a specific game release, but was simply played at the right time by the right streamers. 

As a result, seemingly any game could become the next Among Us if given the right exposure. However, it is likely the highly collaborative nature of Among Us that has led to such sustained engagement. Like the comic book crossover events of old, audiences simply enjoy when their favorite entertainers interact with one another. Whenever Among Us finally begins its decline, it will likely be another game that allows for friendly competition and discourse between streamers that takes its place.
