Dreamocel interview: “If you are not a tier one team you are not going to make any money”

The Indonesian team BOOM Esports, formerly known as BOOM ID are at their first Dota Pro Circuit tournament in almost a year, and we couldn’t miss the opportunity to talk to Randy Muhammad “Dreamocel” Sapoetra about all the changes that happened to his team during this whole year.

The interview was conducted by our special reporter at the StarLadder ImbaTV Minor, Taras Bortnik.

Hi Dreamocel, long time no see. It’s been a while since BOOM qualified for a Dota Pro Circuit tournament, so let’s start our interview by talking about what happened to the team, why it took you guys so long to claim a ticket to a Minor.

Well, one of the main reasons is the fact that the SEA scene is becoming more competitive, while we did a lot of changes to the roster and some of us even swapped roles a bit, so it took us time to figure everything out. For example, when we had inYourdreaM, who is a mid laner, I suggested that I should try play 4 and have him in the carry role. That didn’t work well, so I switched back to 1, but he had to play support 4. It again didn’t work and inYourdreaM told us that he wants to join another team, so we let him go. After that, we got another Indonesian player, Hyde, to fill in position 4. He is really good and we immediately started to improve, I feel like we know how to win now.

I’d like to talk to you a bit more about your experience in the support role because it’s a bit unusual to see a carry player switching to 4. I mean, we have a lot of offlaners who swap between 3 and 4, but carry players, not that many.

When I wanted to try to play 4 I was thinking that I know what I should do because I know what annoys me as a carry when the enemy support 4 is playing well. I also like the freedom and the creativity that this role gives you as a player. To be honest, because you have so many things to do, so many things that you need to be aware of as a support 4,  I think this is by far the hardest role in the game. Or at least this is how I see it now after I tried it.

How do you guys feel as a team coming to this tournament with you back to your initial carry role and with a new player for position 4?

We feel great and excited to have the chance to play again in this arena. It’s been a year since I last played in this venue. Regardless of what result we will get this time around, I’m super proud of my team and I’m happy that we managed to qualify for this.

BOOM Esports is more of a tier 2-3 team right now and I’d like to ask you how do you see the new DPC system announced by Valve. Are the regional leagues something good for a team like yours?

The Regional Leagues system is surely beneficial for teams like ours. I think if nothing changed with the next DPC, the Southeast Asia region would not have had any chance to grow, to develop anymore. For instance, the Indonesian Dota 2 scene is declining because most of the organizations don’t want to spend money, to invest in something that doesn’t have a clear future. The effort to grow a Dota 2 team, to start from scratch with a  group of five young players is simply not worth it at this moment.

If you are not a tier one team you are not going to make any money and you can’t sustain yourself, you can’t dedicate yourself as a player 100 % to the game because you have to find a job, a way to survive. So, yeah, I’m really excited to see how everything will change in the next season.

In January you made three years with BOOM Esports, what’s your reason for being so loyal to them?

I once told myself that if I am to join another team, it will be a European one, so I can enjoy a whole new experience. My motto is “If I feel stuck or I feel like I’m not learning something at all, I’ll make a change.” During the winter vacation, I went through a whole reset process, I worked on my state of mind and all, because I was losing all my confidence. I felt like I didn’t know how to win a Dota 2 game anymore. I still need to work on my mentality, but for now,  even if we are at our first DPC tournament this season, I feel like any SEA team is beatable.

Thanks a lot for talking to us, appreciate your time and I hope to get to talk to you again soon!

Thank you.
